Square edge plaid

I

Tribal Owl Pattern

So I've started taking classes at Otis in textile and surface design. I am hoping this is a way i can mix art fashion and design together!

I also tried it with a little yellow and really like the pop of color

the eyes

this is in progress right now. i havnt decided if i want to fill in the white space or not. im also a little undecided about the orientation, but i think i like the option above the best.

scallops

it cant be seen here because the border is white, but this illustration has a once inch white border. im trying to think more about how the images will look once they are window mounted and framed.

Heart Swirl

Dillow Blob

Ha sometimes I feel bad for my drawings....why? because of what I name them.
I usually just go with whatever comes to mind when saving the file on my computer.
this one? it is a blob...and the circles within it have a pillowish look with dots
this apparently equals "Dillow blob" :)

I would like to separate the circle figures to make a large polka dot pattern soon

untitled_swoop

I am adding more to this right now, but i wanted to post what i had so far. I think i am going to fill in all the space on this one since it already extends off the paper

update

Galactic frame

Im thinking about using the empty frame to make some prints so they can act as frames for pictures or other images.

Fan

untitled blob

This is kind of an organic amoeba blob,
I think it is also a subconscious ode to the Late clothing designer Alexander Mcqueen, who's recent patterns might have inspired my color pallet.

4 Leaf

I'm definitely thinking about adding more color here, but i also kind of like the simplicity

Fleur

I'm still contemplating adding a bit more black...we'll see, I think i need to look at it longer

orientation

here is an image before i added more color
after a friends suggestion i decided to take a look at it upside down. very animal like.

untitled stripe _1

This I did just today. I took inspiration partially from the piece that is currently in my blog header (which is from a graphic mock-up poster).

I like this piece much better in person, I think it is partially due to my scanner again and the yellow looks more even. I have been working on this thick canvas paper which is a beige color (this is because i have A TON of it, i know thats a horrible reason so i might be looking for something a bit whiter soon)

Archie

Here is a piece I did just this past weekend. It developed from a pattern i was playing around with, I noticed the owl shape and decided to run with it.

I have been working on a pretty small scale recently since i really like to see detail. this is 5.5 X 4.25
I also have a red version that I will poster later, I want to add some more contrast first.
Something that I did on purpose here and that I think I will play with more is what I call asymmetrical symmetry. I really like the distorted mirror image.

Portfolio Hosting

I saw a friend who had her portfolio hosted on this site and its free!! (up till a certain point of course) I am always looking for better places to host my portfolio. Even though i have been attempting to make mariehildebrand.com for over a year i'm much to apathetic towards web design and re-teaching myself dreamweaver to actually do it :)

I have only just started loading stuff (and choosing what to upload) but it seems to be a pretty decent site!

Sphere

This is another illustration that developed on the same trip.

groove nectar

I started this over the holidays while on vacation, it is a glimpse in where I think my illustrations are headed. much more organic. (sry the pic above is such bad quality, it was just a photo taken in very bad lighting.

Here is the final scan, I had to do a bit of photoshopping, I'm getting the feeling that my scanner is a really bad one, but oh well use what you have!

A few months back when I was contemplating really wanting to pursue illustration, I decided that I wanted to play around with illustrating on wood. above was the result of my trip to home depot. at the time I really wanted to play around with the wood grain and use it to develop images and patterns.

sadly almost half of this wood has become unusable due to rain over the holidays (and me leaving it on the porch of course)
next time i venture out to get wood I think I will test out some different kinds tho. One of my favorite illustrators often works and mounts on birch so that will probably be my next experiment. (i will post some of her work and site later)

my weapon of choice (and it had been for some time) is very basic ink and pen. I often just stick to using one of the most basic tips. I also think I will be venturing to the art store again soon to get some new colors.

one of the first pieces i decided to make was inspired by an image that was used on T-shirts by the designer Christopher Kane. Below is the stages i went though to produce my baboon image!

I have since moved on to doing more organic illustrations, since i never really finished my baboon,  (i just tinted the rest of the wood with a white wash) I might bring in some of my new style and make one big messy mash up.

Helloooo

Hello,
My name is Marie and I graduated from the University of Southern California last spring with a degree in fine arts emphasis in graphic design. I am trying to figure out post college where i want to take my career and where I want to end up in my life. Even though I emphasized in graphic design, I have recently become very passionate about illustration and I want to see where that avenue can take me as well.
I am going to use this blog to showcase my current and in process artwork.
I hope that this blog will followed me while i explore my graphic design and illustration career.
